Port Tampa Bay Approves Contract for Channel Deepening
Port Tampa Bay has approved a crucial contract for its long-awaited shipping channel deepening and widening project.
The project, estimated between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion, will deepen the main 42-mile channel from 43 to 47 feet and widen it to 500 feet, improving accessibility for larger vessels. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partnership marks the start of design and pre-construction engineering, with construction expected to begin in FY 2028. This modernization ensures the port can accommodate global trade trends and maintain its position as Florida’s largest port by cargo tonnage.
