How long have you worked for/with the Port? 40 Years. In 1977 I started out dispatching tugboats at St. Philip Towing while still in school and became a permanent employee soon after that. In 1987 the Steinbrenner family (Bay Transportation) purchased St. Philip Towing and I continued my employment with them until Hvide Marine (now called (Seabulk Towing) purchased Bay Transportation in 1997. It was shortly thereafter-in October 1999 that we formed Marine Towing of Tampa, LLC.
What are your main responsibilities? Overseeing day-to- day operations, negotiating contracts and maintaining relationships with our customer base worldwide.
What do you love most about your job? The people I deal with on a daily basis. Over the years I’ve developed not only a business relationship with many of our customers but also a friendship. There’s never a dull moment.
What advice would you give to the young generation? Stay in school and get a good education. Many maritime related positions now require a college education, so if you want the best opportunity for employment stay in school. Start saving money as soon as you can no matter what the amount is…save, save, save.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I was all about baseball. I played baseball as a kid growing up and in school and always dreamed of playing professionally.
When you are not at work, what you do enjoy doing? My wife and I enjoy working out-side maintaining our 5 acres. Traveling, and spending time with our two grandsons ages 5 & 2.
