Captain Allen Thompson to Receive Distinguished Award at Port Tampa Bay’s Annual Anchor Ball

- Captain Allen Thompson has recently been named the 2019 winner of the Captain James McKay Port Achievement Award. This annual award recognizes an individual for their long-time service and commitment to the maritime industry of the Ports of Tampa Bay. Captain Thompson will be formally presented with this award at the 2019 Anchor Ball, a signature event hosted by Port Tampa Bay, Tampa Port Ministries and the Tampa Bay Maritime Scholarship Foundation.

“Captain Thompson has championed Port Tampa Bay throughout our region, our state, our nation and internationally for almost two decades.  He has been a tremendous ambassador for the maritime industry in general and to the Port in particular,” said Port Tampa Bay President and CEO Paul Anderson.

Captain Allen Thompson is currently the Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Pilots Association. Captain Thompson’s work with the Tampa Bay Pilots follows a distinguished career of over 30 years with the United States Coast Guard. While serving in this role, he received the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal with two gold stars and the Coast Guard Achievement Medal.

Captain Thompson’s dedication to the maritime community is further portrayed through his work within the Ports of Tampa Bay. From 1999 to 2002, he served as Commanding Officer and Captain of the Port of U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Tampa, Florida, providing strong leadership throughout this assignment including the days and weeks following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In addition, he has been a board member of the Tampa Bay Harbor Safety and Security Committee since its inception in 2004. Captain Thompson has served as Club President for the Propeller Club - Port of Tampa and has also chaired the Subcommittee for the National Harbor Safety Committee.

Anchor Ball is scheduled to be held on Sept. 14, 2019 at the Bryan Glazer Family JCC.
